Hucknall is a small town in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire. With a population of almost 35,000, Hucknall is mostly a dormitory town, located as it is 11km north of Nottingham and 14km from Mansfield. Hucknall was on the A611, but this road now bypasses the town and commuters can get to Junction 27 of the M1 just 5km away.
Known as Hucknall Torkard from 1295 to 1915, the town was a busy market town centred around the church of St Mary Magdalene, which was built by the Anglo-Saxons. During the 19thand 20th centuries, coal was discovered and mined in the surrounding Leen Valley, which brought great wealth and three railway lines to the town.
Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788 to 1824) and his computer programmer daughter Ada Lovelace (1815 to 1852) are both buried in the parish church graveyard.
